Planning

  1. Installation methods

1.1 From an FTP server, where the FTP server is in the same subnet as the HMC and the Support Element Server (SE).

1.2 From a DVD/CD you create containing the install images. An FTP server is also required, but this method does not require the FTP server to be in the same subnet as the HMC and the SE. However, the FTP server must be accessible from the target installation LPAR (connection through OSA card)

  1. Supported Hardware

2.1 Servers

The following servers are supported:

  • IBM z13™ (IBM Machine Type 2964, any model, 2964-N30, N63, N96, NC9, or NE1)
  • IBM z13s (IBM Machine Type 2965, any model, 2965-N10 or N20)
  • IBM zEC12 (IBM Machine Type 2827, any model, 2827-H20, H43, H66, H89 or HA1)
  • IBM zBC12 (IBM Machine Type 2828, any model, 2828-H06 or 2828-H13)
  • LinuxONE™ Rockhopper (IBM Machine Type 2965, any model, 2965-L10 or 2965-L20)
  • LinuxONE Emperor (IBM Machine Type 2964, any model, 2964-L30, L63, L96, LC9, or LE1)

2.2 Networking features (check manual for completeness)

The following networking features are supported:

  • IBM OSA-Express5S
  • IBM OSA-Express4S
  • IBM OSA-Express3S (zEC12/zBC12 only) -- OSA-Express3S in KVM for IBM z does not support using VLANs or flat networks together with Open vSwitch.

2.3 Crypto features (check manual)

2.4 Storage devices

The supported devices can be check on this website

IBM System Storage Interoperation Center (SSIC) https://www-304.ibm.com/systems/support/storage/ssic/interoperability.wss

Directions:

  • Select IBM z Systems on Host Platform
  • Select IBM KVM for z Systems V1.1 on Operating Systems

For any other combination of Server + SAN + Storage not provided below, check the website or contact your IBM representative.

There are 272 supported configuration options:

SAN:

  • Brocade 6510
  • Brocade DCX 8510-4
  • Brocade DCX 8510-8
  • Cisco MDS 9706 (9710-E06)
  • Cisco MDS 9710 (9710-E08)
  • IBM SAN384B-2 (2499-416)
  • IBM SAN48B-5 (2498-F48)
  • IBM SAN768B-2 (2499-816)

Adapter (HBA, CNA, etc)

  • IBM FC 0418 = FICON Express 16S LX
  • IBM FC 0419 = FICON Express 16S SX

Probably is wrong, because FICON 16S is not supported on IBM servers prior z13. Please disregard this information, any Host Bus Adapter (HBA) or FICON card will work ;-)

Connection Protocol:

  • FCP (z Systems)
  • High Performance FICON (zHPF)

Again, KVM for z works with Fibre Connection (FICON) protocol.

Storage models supported:

  • DS8700
  • DS8800
  • DS8870
  • DS8880
  • FlashSystem 840
  • FlashSystem 900

  • Storwise V3500
  • Storwise V3700
  • Storwise V5000 Host Attachment
  • Storwise V7000 Host Attachment
  • SVC Host Attachment

Storage minumum microcode levels supported:

  • DS8700 (R6.3)
  • DS8800 (R6.3)
  • DS8870 (R7.5)
  • DS8880 (R8.0)
  • FlashSystem 840 (1.4.x.x)
  • FlashSystem 900 (1.4.x.x)
  • FlashSystem A9000 (12.0.x)
  • FlashSystem A9000R (12.0.x)

  • Storwise V3700 (7.6.x)
  • Storwise V5000 (7.6.x)
  • Storwise V7000 (7.6.x)
  • SAN Volume Controller (SVC) (7.6.x)
  1. Supported Linux distributions
